The Zombie Apocalypse: The Common Sense ApproachSubmitted by BAWBCABOOSE7 on Wed, 12/23/2009 - 04:42 |
In the event of a zombie apocalypse, I am taking anybody who'll go with me, and we're heading straight into the center of the largest city we can get to, New York if possible. With most people today believing that in an outbreak the city center is a complete death trap (Which it will be, for the first 12 hours or so), everyone who is not barricading themselves into their apartments will probably be running for their lives to get out of the city in every direction. The zombies, hungry for flesh and blood, will follow their prey out of the city and into rural areas. With most if not all zombie 'life' gone, we will be at least moderately safe in a place that zombies probably would have no reason to return to.
I wouldn't immediately run for the nearest gun store, on the simple logic that 1. People who own and run gun stores generally like guns and know their way around them very well, and know their way around the shop. They'll want to protect their stores of supplies, and 2. Most people will have that thought; run for guns then run for your life. I will also not be stopping by any grocery stores until at least four days after the outbreak, as many people will try to get there as fast as possible, and panicking people who sense imminent death are easily more dangerous than zombies. Also, with many zombies following these people into these stores, many will become infected or completely eaten. After all, grocery stores have windows that fuck with you in this context... they are designed to display food =P. Four days gives ample time for any infected to leave the store, the remaining stragglers can be eliminated if need be. Besides, a person can go two weeks without food.
After that, I would attempt to find a shelter near the city center, something like an abandoned police station or a small bank. Somewhere that is designed to stand against human attack. A police station would be ideal; barred doors and windows, holding cells and interrogation rooms with bulletproof glass, and most importantly, riot gear. Then I will sit back, and try to live as long as possible, gathering supplies when needed and trying to find a farming store or gardening dept. with vegetable seeds to plant a large communal garden on the roof of the shelter. I would also attempt to find livestock such as chickens or goats, small animals that need very little feed and can produce food more than once. Rescuing survivors is not a priority though... in this world, human emotion and compassion need to take a back seat to survival, and more survivors are more mouths to feed, more people to watch out for, and more chance of tension within the group. That's it, I'm surviving! =D
I can see your logic of the zombie's following people out of the city, but most people today are too stupid or stubborn to leave the city and are prime targets for zombies. In an ideal situation this would be a good plan, but you have to account for the stubborn and stupid.
The great part though about the stubborn is that being such prime targets they will be some of the first to become infected, and then they will then follow the others out. Besides, when the shit hits the fan not many are really going to want to be stubborn with a freshly killed psychopath pseudo-breathing down their necks. And stupid people tend to make mistakes quite often, so I would assume any zombie worth it's salt will be able to pick a couple off. A hurricane is one thing, zombies are another =P
