I know my neighborhood well, and I know my city well, If I were to stay in my house I would definently survive, I live in a two story house with only one point of entry, that point of entry is on the bottom floor, I could easily destroy my wood staircase and get a small ladder to go between the first floor and the second floor, I have a living room, A bathroom, 2 bedrooms, 1 kitchen, and 1 dining room all on the second floor. If my house is compromised by zombies I could easily use my bedroom window to escape to my garage. My garage is a seperate building which is two stories tall as well, with a wooden staircase that can also be destroyed like in the house, I would then work off of the second floor until the garage is compromised. But you're 'stuck' in an area you know with resources. And I could easily survive from my upstairs windows to the floor, even without a makeshift ladder. Anywhere defensive you're technically 'stuck' you just need to make it so the zombies can't get to where you're trapped.
Max Brooks suggests that tactic for a short term (level 1) infection, so I'd do it at first.
