Survival.. on the high seas(kinda)Submitted by Abballa on Mon, 08/16/2010 - 04:27 |
Outbreak.
At the beginning of the outbreak, the most Important step will be rounding up my already prepared team of people(35 or so) a collection consisting of trades people, medical staff(docs/nurses), farm workers, educators/academics, and "warriors"(army friends, various martial artists and gun/weapons enthusiasts).
With this small team assembled, we can begin preparations to move to a secure site (abandoned container ship), and living in a small country city will be invaluable to this phase, as we will have longer to prepare and arm ourselves as the bigger cities are torn apart.
Escape.
The plan to move people and get to the ship is to armour up and fortify two diesel fuelled stolem buses. This is where the trades people will come in handy, as they posses the skills needed to weld and make safe the buses.
Once they are ready to use, the transports will be loaded up with medical supplies, bottled water, weapons, and survivors, and we will then drive/fight our way 350km to Portland Victoria, where we can commandeer an oil tanker, container ship or both, which will become a floating city 3km off shore in the deep shipping lanes near Portland, It is critical that this operation goes as smoothly as possible.
Initial setup. 1st month.
During the first few days, we will begin to prep the ship(s) as living conditions, sweeps will be conducted of every inch of the ship, to ensure there are no infected on board, and to get a better understanding of the ships layout.
Once safely set up aboard our new home, shore vessels will be arranged to be taken back to the mainland to collect building supplies, and anything that will assist in furthuring our survival.
First built will be a boarding/quarrentine area, where raiding parties will be medically assessed and quarentined if nessacery, but this are will also serve as a processing stage for any new survivors found.
Next built will be a clinic, for our medical staff to operate out of, followed by a work shop for maintainence and mechanical staff.
Containers aboard the ship will be searched for any worthwhile materials and then transformed into living quarters.
2 security and raiding teams will be established from the most profficient and combat orientated among us, these teams will be charged with the security aboard the colony and any external threats, as well as supply raids to the mainland, a hugely valuable task.
Raiding.
Using smaller vessels, supply raids will be carried out every 3 days, the security teams will alternate shifts between on board and shore duties.
These teams will travel as heavily armed and prepared as possible, to the mainland.
Once on shore, they will collect items from medical supplies, to general equipment and food.
Upon returning to the colony, they will be checked by the medical staff, quarrentined 2-3 days and returned to on board duties. At which time, the alternate team will handle security then raids.
New Surviors.
From time to time, it is assumed survivors will be found, they will be detained, secured and transported to the colony, with a maximum of 8 at a time being accepted.
Once aboard, they will be processed, eg:
Name:
Age:
Family members:
Profession:
Last contact with infected:
After processing, they will be detained in the quarrentine holding cells for 3 days and carefully monitored for any signs of infection.
After three days and no infection they will be introduced to the general populace and assigned duties based on profession.
2-6 months.
During this time, it is essential to establish the essentials for living;
A Water purification station for purifying sea water, will be tasked to the scientific and mechanical teams, allowing for one of the ships engines to be converted to do so(also to act as a power station).
livestock(from mainland) and hydroponic farming will ensure that the colonies food needs are met.
The addition of a second ship to build up a sort of flotilla would probably be quite feasible at this point, and of course the same steps taken on ship 1 will be duplicated accordingly, however if population size is still low, this will not be nessacery.
6-12 months.
By now the colony should be holding a steady populace and a routine way of life, with the only real problem being diesel fuel to run the ships engines, but As always expanding and furthering the colony is the highest priority.
If the Colony is sustainable, then at the 12 month point, the whole process should be fairly stable and concrete.
all that remains is waiting and maintaining the living qualities.
I may consider joining you. I love this idea.
Na I enjoyed it, always willing to accept feedback.
I've actually been reading the other stuff you've commented on and laughing at the ownage that ensues. I'll start working on my next plan soonish.
Honestly, your preparations all depend on the stage of infection your area is in.
Buses, will be taken by those who own them, government, faster raiders, or flipped over, since in the initial rush, people are going to hurry, and won't people won't have the time to let a bus merge, so they rush the turns, and eventually flip over.
Oil tanker, same deal as buses but more will be taken, since they are perfect in moving a large amount of cargo, and can vary from human cargo, to water or food, very versatile. So don't depend on stealing any of these.
You can guarantee those ships are going to be taken. Most of my friends have a boat oriented plan, and using them as an example can only imagine how many people on the coast have boat oriented plans.
Supply raids, no. There are just so many wrong things about this. If you plan to have your people in an urban environment for more then 20 minutes, they'll all die. Let me show you my math. In a small suburb-like area, there are 5000 people every square mile. To make it easier that is about 12 zombies/football field. Zombie speed when hunting, is 3mph. If you fire a weapon, or are upwind of the zombies, you will have to face a total of 2000 zombies every 20 minutes. Even if you down one zombie/bullet, that still chews away at your ammo supply, every three days.
Food. 1.5 lbs/person. That's more then 50 lbs of food every day. I just want to tell you that, I don't fish much out in the ocean so I don't know how big and how difficult the fish are to catch, but if you only depend on fish, which you probably will, how will you supply your colony's nutritional needs and prevent brain damage from the intake of mercury.
thanks for taking the time to deliver such a well thought out and detailed response.
i actually wrote this plan out when i first joined the site, and only now got around to posting it, since that time ive decided going bush solo or with around 3 people is a much better option, however not so long term.
Im now looking at isolated areas, non-town areas, 3 day up hill hike kinda areas, as i can totally agree with what you've pointed out.
cheers.

Your welcome, sorry if my response came off as a bit high-horsed or insulting.
I'd like to see a new plan from you soon! Your first had a ton of more thinking inside it than my first.
