Where I live, the easiest and best place to fortify would be the local middle school. it's less than 2 miles away from my home and is close to many things in town. it is more or less square shaped. to fortify it, all that is neccesary is a few things. the stairs leading up to the 2nd floor usually have a classroom parralel to them. i would, either smashing or using small explosives, detonate those walls to give a firing position on the stairs. there are 4 sets of stairs as well as an elevator for handicapped people and ladders to get down from the roof access points. using material and random crap such as filing cabinets and tables, i would clog up the four stairways. just to give you an idead of how tough it would be to get onto the 2nd floor: hardened doors surrounded by ?safety glass? (the glass with wires running through it). next there is the clutter and crap, physically blocking the stairs. and then another hardened door and safety glass. to get survivors up, we would use the elevators and/or the ladders and roof access points. the science room near bothe points would serve as a screening room for infection such as bites and scratches. other rooms would serve as sleeping quarters, an armory, an ammo dump, first aid station, and an ops room (including maps of the surrounding area). there is fencing easily available that could be used to set as the first line of defense against zombie hordes, just to alert us that zombies are this close. Sharpshooters will take night shifts watching the surrounding area for infected. The location of the school helps alot. there is a set amount of open land in any direction around the school, but it isn't miles away from civilization. I live in a suburban town, so many houses should be moderately stocked with items. luckily for me, there is at least 3 gas stations, 2 supermarkets, and (drumroll please) a factory which creates guns/gun parts within a 4 mile radius. for long term survival, there is a field behind the school that can be used for planting. my plan is only meant to meet the needs of about 3-6 other people, so if anymore people that showed up, i would have to send them away.
i understand that my plan is very unorganised, and i will work on that in the future.
Before you look at my questions, you can guarantee that the gas stations, supermarkets, and factory are already raided and overrun with zombies.
When in terms harshness of zombie outbreak will you take the school? How will you take the school if its already taken?
What would you use to smash the walls, do you know how thick it is, and where would you get the explosives if you were to use them?
How will you obtain weapons to fend off the zombies?
How will you supply food and water to your compound in the long term?
Understand that in the suburbs, there are about 5000 people/sq mile. That is about 12 people/football field, everywhere. If you fire of a gun it will be heard over one mile, that will alert upwards of 5000 zombies to your area. Anywhere you are, you will be alerting zombies from afar just because of your scent, being carried by the wind.
