In the event of a zombie invasion, my plan is broken down into multiple phases with action being needed before during and after the attack itself.
Phase one requires a stockpiling of food, fortification material, ammo, and weapons. This phase requires only about a week to be completed. During this time I will stockpile food in the form of military MREs and fresh water from the nearby military commissary. The MREs would be based on 2 meals a day and for 4 weeks of food would cost about 250 dollars. For water, I would purchase 55 gallon drums and fill them in advance for a total cost of about 180 dollars for around 41 gallons of water per week for 4 weeks. For weaponry, I would have a traditional rifle as well as an assault rifle with around 500 rounds of ammunition each as well as a compound bow with sufficient arrows in case I need to retrieve them due to ammunition shortage. For closer ranged weaponry I would use a katana and kukri knife as a last resort.
Phase two would be a combination of fortification, survival, and forays into the zombie infested world to acquire supplies if needed. Fortification of my apartment is not easy as it is unfortunately a ground level apartment. The front door opens into the apartment and the entrance-way would be fortified using wood purchased during phase one. In addition to fortifying this area, each of the rooms in the apartment has windows that would be immediately boarded up with only small vision/firing slots open to the outside. These blockades would be reinforced to withstand the press of zombie bodies to insure that the mass does not break them down. Survival would primarily consist of keeping constant communication with the outside world via radio as well as maintaining a semblance of normalcy where possible to avoid paranoia and depression brought on by the hopelessness of living in a world ruled by the undead. The final aspect of this phase would involve forays into the outside world in order to acquire supplies once the 4 week supply of food/water/ammunition runs out. In order for this to be a successful operation, it is necessary to plan out a location where these supplies can be easily acquired. The nearest location available to me with sufficient supplies would be a Walmart distribution center located an an hour and 38 minutes from my apartment. This trip is not far under normal driving conditions, however with a zombie invasion, it would require a two part trip. The first part of the trip would be to the military base to acquire a military LMTV. With its superior off-road capability and large transport capacity for supplies and other survivors it would make an excellent vehicle for the zombie attack. Once this vehicle is acquired I would travel with my team to the distribution center. These distribution centers are vast and would first require a meticulous sweep in order to insure the safety of the team. Once this sweep has been performed, fortification would again take precedence and all entrances would be boarded up or otherwise blockaded to avoid any zombies entering the facility. After the security of the distribution center has been established, work would begin immediately on long term preparations such as the creation of a garden and the stockpiling and rationing of food within the facility. Once this has been accomplished, life would revert back to survival as my team and I wait for either the zombies to all die out, be killed, or for our own deaths... whichever comes first.
Phase three would come only if and when the zombie menace has been eliminated or otherwise neutralized. It would consist primarily of rebuilding society to what it once was as well as preparation for the next zombie invasion. After the first attack, it will be much easier to prepare as others will no longer mock those of us who prepare for the inevitable. As another part of this phase, there will be copious volumes of drinking and general partying and reveling in our own superiority as zombie hunters.
