Inspired to surviveSubmitted by NWwheelin7109 on Mon, 06/22/2009 - 09:35 |
Ok, ive read several plans about using home improvement stores as shelters and i like it, but people dont use the store correctly. This is what my plan would be for suriving in a lowes/home depot/ace store.
i used to work at one so it might help me know a little more about how they built the building.
First of all you will want a gun, i have a concealed weapons permit so i have mine on me at all times, but either way, make sure you have a pistol or light weight gun before beginning to hide. Locate a home improvement store and make sure the coast is clear, run for the doors. Once you get inside, hit the main switch for the electronic doors, then shove 1x2's in between the door railings so they cant be forced open. If you have people with you, great, if you dont, dont worry about it. Now comes the time where you really have to ask yourself "am i doing this to survive or be a hero?" because we are going to have to kill some people. If you feel they will not benefit you or themselves in time of crisis, they must be killed for the greater good of the group. Find out who seems to have physical impairments, people who cannot think quickly under pressure and anyone that just seems shaken up after this tiny ordeal (if they cant handle being chased by zombies from afar then you dont want them around if zombies get thru your defenses. Once you have singled these people out, dont even tell them what youre doing, tell them you need them to stand still so you can check for infection, take your pistol, and as quickly as possible plant one shot between there eyes. Dont be a coward and shoot them in the back of the head, be a man and mourne for these people, we are only doing this to prevent them from fucking anything up in the future. Try not to have too many people because you need the food in the store to last until the renewable food growing phase is under control.
Now, if someone comes to the door and begs you to let them in and theyre pounding on the door making a lot of noise, HIDE! and just let them get eaten, the zombies were probably following her anyway, once the zombies go away, sneak back out to the main floor, be quiet for now, find the power tools, plug every single battery in to let them charge for a while, now head down to lumber, grab 4x8 sheets of MDF and place them up against the doors, leave about 2 inches of room in the middle where the doors meet youll see why in a minute, attach the MDF to the doors using long self tapping screws, go to tools, grab an arc welder and some 6013 welding rod and a welding mask, weld the seams where the doors come together and make sure you get good penetration for max strength, next go to building materials, grab some 3mil black plastic sheeting and drape it down every single door, leave excess to droop a little past the bottom and top, take some silicone caulk, run an even bead all along the edges, press down hard, now take duct tape and seal it all off, this will keep your smell from getting outside where the zombies can sense it and keeps you hidden while you build more security inside and acts as a sound dampener.
Now that youre nicely hidden, go down to insulation, grab as much R35 as you can, break the batts open, line them up 2 batts thick in front of the doors and any thin bits of wall, take 2x4's and as quiet as possible make a frame around all the insulation to hold it up, next go to hardware and grab some simpson strong tie coil straps, youll need a lot, so take what you can. Wrap the straps around the insulation from the top down and secure it with either screws (if theres wood exposed) or with JB weld or contact cement if theres just concrete. This is going to keep all sound from exiting the building so zombies cant hear you and it will keep it warm in case you lose power, this is another reason why you have the batteries for the tools charging.
Now youre ready to work. Start by take 4x8 sheets of OSB and lay them out in front of the doors, build a frame that will hold cement around the OSB, next poor in quick dry cement (you can use a cement mixer from building materials, ready mix cement and buckets of water from the bathroom). before the cement gets super hard, plunge 1/2"x4 foot rebar into the semi dry cement, let it dry, build your frame up more so it is about 2-3 feet high, fill the rest with cement and let it dry, now if this was a professional job and you cared, you could tear down the frame, but for this, just leave it, all your doing is making a concrete barrier SHOULD for some reason a zombie or 10 break thru the doors.
Its always good to have a backup plan, and whats a backup plan without explosives? Go down to plumbing, grab some 1/8" inch thick metal pipe, cut into 6 inch lengths, thread one end of the pipe with the pipe threader, take a metal cap, place it on the unthreaded end of the pipe and weld it shut, poor paint thinner, keroseen and nails into the pipe (MAKE SURE THE PIPE HAS COOLED FIRST)screw a threaded metal cap onto the other side, drill a 5/64 inch hole in one end and squeeze in some twine using a a straightened paper clip, make sure only HALF of the twine is soaked in keroseen, middle of the string to the tip, once you have a number of these made, take them up to the roof and put them out of the sun in an easy to find place.
In case you havent already, there is usually a way to access the roof from gardening if you get on an OP and raise it up to the rafters, climb onto the roof from them. youre up here because you want to see what the numbers look like for zombies outside since you cannot see outside anymore, this will give you a way to assess your length of time youre going to be in here and you want to get your pipe bombs up there and keep checking on them to make sure theyre not getting too hot.
There should be a wind up radio somewhere in the store, they sell em everywhere now, use this to listen for any news. If there are people with you, give each of them a walkie talkie from the cabinet by customer service (or in the comm center in some stores) tell everyone to stay on channel 1 because there could be other people out there using the same channel (its most likely what people would try and broadcast on first). this can be good for keeping tabs on everyone.
For food, you will want to start growing the fruit trees and grape vines in garden, dont leave them in the pots, build a big sand box basically, at least 2 feet deep, fill it with dirt, compost, steer manure and nutrients, plant whatever grows food in the soil and keep it healthy, while you wait for fruit to grow, ration out the candy bars and such from around the store, its not healthy but it will keep you alive, dont drink out of the faucets because the water supply could be contaminated, for now drink the bottles water and sodas around the store, dont forget about the employee break room, all kinds of good stuff in there. If you MUST drink from the faucet, boil the water first, take a metal puddy dish from building materials, fill it with water, take a torch from hardware, light it and heat the metal container until the water boils, let it cool a little and drink it.
You should be able to survive the zombie outbreak as long as you grow the fruit, boil your water, listen for any signs of hope on the radio and stay sane.
I know, i know, i didnt talk about zombies breaking thru and what you should do, i think its obvious what you should and dont need any explanation on what to do. Chances are they will not get thru the concrete barriers you build and all the security doors are 2.5" thick steel but you should have built concrete around those too if for no other reason, just for something to do. If you think its a good idea to build stairs to the roof so you dont have to keep using the OP, WRONG! Lets say for stroke of bad luck and heaven and hell meet each other half way and zombies get into the building, youll be able to ride the OP up onto the rafters but the zombies wont be able to get near you, no way its happening, if you built stairs, theyd just climb up eventually, at least up there youre safe from them. If they for some god for saken reason, find a way up there, you have your trusty pipe bombs on hand.Be sure to carry a bevy of possible weapons with you, i have a concealed weapons permit and always have my 357 on me, but it only has 6 rounds so i would also carry a melee weapon, something dense, manuverable, easy to carry and deadly is what youre looking for, its totally up to you what you want to carry but im going with a machette and a 5lb one handed dead blow hammer (very common tool used to break up concrete and duraboard).
I forgot to mention a good place to sleep, now some people would say "sleep on the insulation, its soft and warm" well unless you dont mind waking up with a pounding headache and a sore throat from hell and itching like a crack adict, i would suggest taking painting tarps, the big heavy ones, piling them up somewhere close to the OP and sleep there, this gives quick access to the roof should zombies find a way in, although it is HIGHLY unlikely, anything could happen at anytime.
i think you and i could be the zombie apocalypse heros lol
This is the best plan I have ever read.
I will folow your advice exept for shoting the week.
It would be beter to send them out for suplys because
if they don`t come back who cares.
best plan i've seen lol
I like it, but of course this is assuming that the rational side of humans is intact during a seemingly impossible attack such as the "Zombie Invasion".
But I have no doubt that you have thought this through and have quite a backup plan!
Many people, especially in highly populated areas will act spontaneously, aslo assuming that they have not been taken by the virus.
I wish you luck, my friend. One day in the future we may meet on the battlefield... hopefully not against each other!
I have seen some crazy shit and been in some pretty intense situations, my dad was in the marines for most of my life so he would put me in situations where most 8 year olds would probably break down and freakout to an extreme point of insanity, but he trained me since i was little to look at all possibilities and realize there could always be something worse, then you assess your position in the situation, never forgetting you have your brain to use for everything, staying calm and thinking every single step thru is key.
So yeah, im confident i would hold together very well should a zombie invasion occur, i have a plan for all kinds of disasters, not just zombies so i can utilize areas of those other plans into this one too.
i agree, i dont want to see anyone from this site as a zombie, if were all doing things right, we shouldnt have that problem...then again, shit happens
Then you are indeed prepared.
I wish you luck on your many adventures.
Oh, if you please, comment on any faults in my plan so that I may be corrected by an appearing expert!
it seems like a good plan but i see a few defekts with it:
1. most likaly a millions billion people will be there raiding for suplies either befor you get there or before you can block off all ways into the building.
2. depending on how much people are with you, you will run out of candie bars and whatever miniscule foods are there befor your plants can finish growing.
3. you do not have a plan to leave and reenter the building incase of needing emergancies suplies that are not in the building.
thats just a few reasons other then that it seems like a good plan.
there are not 1,000,000 people in this entire county, the building i would choose for this plan is not usually a first stop for looters, theyre going to be hitting up grocery stores, electronics and weapons, it is not a big store and people will most likely head to the bigger lowes down the street instead if they wanted to raid a home improvement store.
i have no problem killing anyone that i dont feel is going to be an asset to my or their survival. I am not proud of it but i have taken a life before, armed robbery in my opinion is grounds for self defense, at any means it takes to ensure my safety, if that means sticking a blade in someones ribs, so be it. so if there was anyone i felt posed a threat to our survival, they would be taken care of no problems on my part. There for, there should not be a shortage of food or water/drinks as long as we ration everything. In order to dispose of the bodies of those i feel are not able to provide any assistance in terms of survival i will throw them into the trash compactor where they will be crushed and expelled into a sealed container at the end of the compactor.
as far as emergency supplies, you have obviously never worked at a home improvement store where you actually have to get your hands dirty, there are first aid kits EVERYWHERE and theyre EMT certified. If someone endures a bad gash, i can stitch them up or myself using synthetic twine from hardware and the first aid kits have needles. I do not wish to leave the building once i am held up in it, i plan to make it a long term stay to outlast the decomposing zombies. As far as the fruits and vegetables, they do have fruiting trees year round so i would plant these trees first, then the younger trees to grow, and pick what was ripe and freeze them in the freezer for as long as i could, only eating what we could spare.
Firstly, it seems to me that a large part of your plan predicates on you arriving before the power is cut. I know that any hardware store worth it's salt is going to have a generator of some sort on hand, but you need fuel to power said generator, and I am aware that you can power a diesel generator with kerosene, but you can only improvise so much with the electricity situation, and you need that electricity to keep your extra food frozen. The only immediate fix that I can see is if the store sells solar panels, and some do, but I don't see that happening in Washington. My second issue was that you said that the roof access would be in the home and garden section, also the fruiting trees would, obviously, be in the home and garden section. The problem is that generally the home and garden section is an exposed outdoor area surrounded by chain link fence. The fence will hold fora while, but eventually the tide of bodies pressing against it is going to bring it down.
Lastly, I was wondering if you have any kind of escape plan in the event of a breech?
Other than those things it really is an excellent plan.
I was misguided in the beginning. lol I thought it said country. oops.
Anyway, I agree, even as people are unpredictable (and yet we are SO predictable) we tend to follow a certain path. i.e. gathering in groups, or surviving alone.
Nice plan. I voted for you.
thankya sir
your plan is awesome
I live within walking distance of "Lowes" and "Homedepot".The homedepot is near a mall and walking distance of Dick's and the lowes is next door to a super wal-mart.
You got my vote. I just have one question...I didn't get the whole thing with the doors, just comment saying what the dealio is.
basically what you want to do with the doors is reinforce everything about them. Once you gain access to the building, there is a switch on one side of the doors that looks like a rocker panel, just flip it off so zombies cant open the doors by standing near the sensor and having the doors slide open
Then you force 1x2's into the rails (the track that the doors slide on, this will wedge between the back edge of the sliding door and the frame of the mechanism, this is just to give you time while the zombies are trying to get in but you should hide before they see you so they dont keep attempting to break in.
Then you get 4x8 sheets of MDF (medium density fiber board) and you cover the glass of the sliding doors, use at least a 1.5" long self tapping screw to attach the MDF to the doors, they will "drill" right thru the dense board, then screw themselves into the metal frame around the door, you leave a 2" gap between both pieces of MDF so you can weld the seam where the doors come together shut so they can never be forced open.
Then you take 3mil black plastic, its like thick PVC plastic painting tarps, you cant see thru it, its durable and helps deflect sound, you use silicone caulk all around the edges of the plastic, press it hard against the frame of the door to help compress the caulk into the cracks and seams, the silicone wont absorb moisture so it wont break down over time, then you use duct tape to help seal all the edges for assurance.
Then you take R35 insulation (approximately 9.625" thick insulation panels, used in attics) you press the R35 up against all the doors, glass sliding, security doors, the big garage roller doors especially, these will let a lot of sound out, its going to take a while, theyre big and tall, so use a ladder too. You build a frame out of 2x4's around the insulation and use metal straps to hold the insulation in place and make sure it doesnt move, since its mostly concrete and metal your working around, you wont be able to staple or nail the insulation on there, use your imagination to get it to stay
Then you basically build big conccrete barriers in front of the doors, all of the doors, this is just a really good security measure, i made them about 3 feet high because any taller and you run the risk of the structures being too top heavy and becoming brittle.
Hope that cleared up the doors a little, its not an easy task but ive been doing construction, masonry and welding since i was a little kid, so this is really isnt all that hard, esecially since you dont have to be real professional with it or make it look pretty lol
This is easily the best plan I have ever seen, bar none. There's even things in those stores for situations you didn't cover. If the virus is/gets airborne the heavy duty filter masks for painting MIGHT stop the virus from entering your system, and if the power runs out then you most likely have generators. The only thing I see wrong with your plan is human nature. Your dad may have turned you into the ultimate survivor, but everyone else will probably be shitting their pants. As far as killing the weak, good plan in theory but it has some holes. 1)If you don't tell the "worthy" what your doing, they might freak and try to kill you.
2)Shooting each person in the head is a waste of ammo. It would be better to either use them as expendable hunter/gatherers or get the "worthy" people to help you kill them a different way.
3)Get a quarantine area. If something happens where one of your group is bitten you can quarantine them to see if they have a natural immunity, then your objective becomes get them to some kind of doctor/scientist so a cure can be manufactured. If they do turn then you can just kill them at a nice leisurely pace.
Over all awesome plan!
