I know the site is based mainly on zombie survival, but how about the rules before the zombie outbreak happens? A lot of people out there are gun happy/crazy and will flip out and try and buy a semi-auto and possibly full-auto weapon, without knowing the full extent of the law.

So my suggestion is putting up a Gun's forum threat poster.. thing, so people can ask questions about what their gun laws are in the state their in, or ask the forum patrons what should be their optimal firearm purchase. Since the zombies haven't attacked yet, its good to not get in trouble with the law!

Check a little north of Houston, in a town called Magnolia.

Now, as far as weapon choices go, I am quite partial to my 7MM, it's powerful, it's accurate, it's simple and it can outrange most other firearms of similar caliber. However, it is also overkill and the ammo is large and heavy, therefore I would have to say that as my primary weapon I would make minor modifications to my semi-automatic .22 short so that it can chamber .22 long. That way I have a weapon that is easy to wield, has a fair ammo capacity, does not restrict my rate of fire too much and allows me to carry thousands of rounds of ammo without even noticing the weight. The only major problem is that the magazine is tube fed, so reloading is a little slow, but making a speed loader would be relatively easy. Also, I know it inside and out, so I'm not worried about breakage or jamming. Chop the stock and replace with a folding wire frame and throw a red dot sight on there and I'd have a pretty sweet little zombie rifle. Hell, it's so light I could chop it down into a sidearm if I wanted to, at the expense of ammunition capacity. Now, some of you might think that a .22 is underpowered, and normally you'd be right, however if you place your shots carefully it can be quite deadly at medium range, it's also really quite for a rifle.
Of course, what works for me might not work for everyone. Don't rely on a firearm you aren't comfortable with.
My "ideal" rig consists of the following:

1x scoped 7mm mag falling block action
1x saddle rifle holster modified to wear on back
1x Colt anaconda .45
1x thigh holster
2x m1911 colt .45 Jericho
2x back holster
1x .22 long with folding stock, red dot sight and suppressor (home made)
1x backpack mounted holster
50x 7mm mag rounds
150x .45 long colt
1000x .22 long
1x hatchet
1x crowbar
1x hunting knife

Just so we're clear, I'm not trying to act like a macho badass with my weapon choices, I took a pragmatic approach that took necessity and my own personal preferences into account. Also, I am a very large guy, I can take the extra weight without being slowed down, I also took into account that military grade weapons are not readily available, so I selected multiple weapons to improve my combat effectiveness that I either already have, or can easily obtain.
Finally, yes I am aware that I have three handguns, the two m1911's are for close to medium range combat, and yes I am ambidextrous and can shoot with both hands at different targets, the revolver is there because I like revolvers. The .22 is for hunting small game and taking out zeds from medium range.
I know what my capabilities are so this rig suits me just fine, but it wouldn't really suit many others.

And if all else fails I could always hit 'em with a tree heh heh heh.

So, you're saying I've fallen upon a puppet?

Gun Stores, gun shows (Really easy to get a gun at those) Some pawn shops even though it's illegal, black market if you've got the right connections, you could (but SHOULDN'T) build one yourself in a pinch, and probably the easiest way would be in online auctions or classifieds.

depends on what channels you go through, like anything else. It can range anywhere from $700 to $2400 just off the top of my head though it would be hard to get an actual AK 47 without a special permit as it is an automatic weapon however it was grandfathered when the 1974 assault weapons ban was passed, so it really comes down to state laws. At any rate I would not recommend an AK 47 for zombie killing because it the ammo is too heavy and it isn't accurate enough.

Good guns aren't cheap, but a good rifle will serve you well if you practice with it.
If you want something new, you can get a .22 at walmart for about $120. I would say do some research on your own and find a gun that you like, go to some shows and shoulder a couple, and when you find one you like, save up and buy it.

Faster huh? How about a lever action 30-30? Or if you want something really Fast, get a semi automatic .22 and buy a firestorm crank. It's a paintball accessory that you mount to your trigger guard. Turn the crank and you basically have fully automatic fire. Though with zombies you don't want anything too fast or you'll just waste ammo.

$160 is not going to get you far. Also, reliability will be the leading factor during the zombie apocalypse. If you have an accurate gun and it breaks, it doesn't matter that it used to be accurate. What matters is that it is broken.

So.. in terms of reliability:

Revolvers are the most reliable handguns available because the action is manual, and there is not the possibility of a stovepipe-style jam. Often, revolvers are also higher caliber than semiautomatic handguns.

Bolt-action rifles are the most reliable rifles available for the same reasons as revolvers- the action is manual, and issues with round ejection do not exist.

Weapons with slides, such as semiautomatic handguns, semiautomatic rifles, and even lever-action rifles, can have any number of issue with their actions, primarily because of the spring that pushes the slide forward and chambers the next round. Although some of these jams are easy to clear, jams such as "stovepipes" are almost impossible to clear without a screwdriver or narrow implement. A "stovepipe" jam happens when the slide comes back too quickly and shoves the last casing back inside the action. Normally, the casing would have just flipped out and hit the ground, but the slide comes back too fast and pins the casing in the action.

Also, revolvers work under water (although only for a few feet)

But not really, because that would be weird.

What it all comes down to is how you take care of it. I know my semi-auto .22 inside and out and I can make repairs to it on the fly if I have to, and it's almost 70 years old. Same thing with my .300 savage, it's a lever action, sure, but I know it inside and out and once again I can repair it if need be, that's why it's 105 years old and still shooting strong. If you know how to take care of your weapon, it won't matter what you've got. That aside, you're absolutely right, he is going to want something more reliable, however you can have the most reliable gun in the world but it wont do you a damn bit of good if you don't have a lot of experience shooting. As for bolt action rifles being the most reliable and accurate, your mostly right. The most accurate and reliable action you can get is falling block action. It's a breach loading rifle that has a lever that raises a block up into the receiver behind the round, a manual hammer hits the firing pin in the block that discharges the round. It's safe, simple, reliable and the most accurate gun I have ever fired. To give you an idea of what it looks like, it is the same mechanism they use on heavy artillery pieces and is a favorite of competition shooters. The downsides are that it is single shot with no magazines and they can get a little spendy.
As for revolvers, well I just love revolvers.

You can get a decent gun for about $300. Best gun I've got, the falling block 7mm, I got for $600 but that was a steal it's worth $1800 new. Like I said before, Research, shop around and when you find one you like, save up and buy it. Go to gun and sporting goods stores and ask questions, usually they'll let you hold one of the guns if you ask them.

Get a flare pistol, you can file down the firing pin and shoot 12 gauge shotgun shells from it. Just let me tell you guys how the test goes before you do anything rash. It should work in an emergency but don't rely on it. Also, as is a flare pistol would mess up a zombie pretty good. Make it a zomb-o-lantern.

Agreed, but those things have RIDICULOUS recoil when you fire 12 gauge ammo out of them.

Yes and no, You need a special permit called a federal firearms license or FFL for short, to bring a firearm across the border into the U.S yourself, what you can do though is order the gun and have it sent to a gun store near you, The owner has to have one in order to operate. It would take a bit of paperwork, but it can be done.

OH GOD OH GOD OH GOD. PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DON'T LOAD ANYTHING BUT BIRDSHOT IN A MAKESHIFT FLAREGUN/SHOTGUN. You will seriously break your hand, no doubt about it, not matter how beefy you are or thing you are. I'm seriously warning you guys, right now.

Also! DO NOT MAKE YOUR OWN GUN. Not only is it illegal, but dangerous. I put up with Justin's flamethrower because.. well, I kind of pretend it's all hypothetical. Seriously, YOU WILL HURT YOURSELF. Even if you have a damn degree in engineering, I don't recommend it .. AT ALL.

The last thing I wanna hear is to hear about someone trying some crazy idea heard on the forum, and getting injured. It would seriously make me upset, and probably get the Admins in trouble if they decide to track it here.

Guns in America! Semi-Auto's are A-OK to a lot of states, but fully auto is pretty much illegal in all the states without some kind of special permission. I got my Siagas for around 600$ bucks, but if you want a cheap-o gun get a Russian SKS, which is a bolt action for around 300$. Other then that, your own you own.

Actually building your own firearms isn't illegal. At least not on a federal level, though the law may vary from state to state. Second, Fully automatic weapons are no longer illegal on a federal level provided they were made before 1979 which was when the assault weapons ban went into effect. In 2006 the ban was voted on for renewal and did not pass, so the legal status on automatic weapons is entirely dependent on what state you live in, though most have some kind of restriction in place. Just check the link at the top if you aren't sure. Lastly, some of the older flare guns were designed to shoot shotgun shells, the old German flare guns from WWII were actually capable of shooting 40mm grenades. I'm not so sure about the new ones, I just know that it is possible. Like I said before, my friend and I are going to test it ourselves by shooting it from a vice with a remote triggering device (read: a piece of string.) Now, as for making your own guns, I have to side with Deadrahart, unless you are a trained gunsmith I don't recommend making your own firearms. When I made the suggestion of using a flare gun, it was with the understanding that it would only be done in an emergency, specifically a zombie related emergency.

Be safe kids

Just so everyone knows, THIS MAN IS TELLING THE TRUTH.

I have seriously burned myself a good 3 or 4 times, but it's ok, because I'm completely fireproof. (it was a birth defect.)

So here is good advice- Unless you don't care about hurting yourself, don't make any home made weapons. If you want to make a flamethrower, don't do it unless you are an idiot moron, or fireproof like me.

Oh, and here's something neat about catching on fire- If you are on fire because there's a lot of gasoline on you, it won't burn you until the gasoline burns away. That gives you about .5 seconds to STOP DROP and ROLL, BABY. Cause I just don't give a dang.

But not really, because that would be weird.

That's true, if you know what you're doing. Factory loads only come in certain grainages, that is they only put certain amounts of powder in the cartridge. They also only put certain bullets with those grainages. If you are good at hand loading, you can adjust the powder load and the bullet type to meet your specific needs.
If your crazy, you can also hand load shotgun shells. There is a guy that tours gun shows around Oregon that hand loads his own shotgun shells. He made chain shot for the shotgun, he loaded glass marbles, rock salt, phosphorous and all sort of other nasty stuff into shotgun shells.

Anyway, if you master hand loading, you really can have a bullet for every occasion.

Yeah, Reloading you bullets is a really cheap way of reusing ammunition, and if you have the tools to do it and a safe area during zombie invasion, it'd the most amazing skill you'd have.

Also, I was thinking of PA Machine gun laws, and pretty much the majority of the US Laws about fully automatic rifles. Here's a link to a site that can help you out.
