Flee to Takutea (revised)

At the time of initial zombie attack, conventional communication (primarily the Internet, but also phones (mobile and landlines)) will still be active. I will attempt to use this to assemble a medium sized group 10-20 of my friends and relatives and anyone else who's prepared to listen and can offer anything (-obviously no-one would be turned away if possible), and used to co-ordinate everyone into a single group. This group will be used to gather resources and materials necesarry for survival- mainly seeds, wood, metal poles and building supplies. At this point, if it is feasible, we will travel to a local Army Cadet base, where one of my friends has the key to the armoury- this is one of only 2 keys, the other being held by a member of the armed forced, who would likely be called away at the first sign of an emergency. I will at this point take the group to the closest/best/most accessible (based on road conditions/current population) civilian marina, steal/borrow/co-erce enough boats, fuel, supplies etc (some will have been pre-stockpiled) to make journey to Takutea. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Takutea]. This will be a looooong journey, so if possible we will utilise any means of transportation. Two of my friends are semi-confident pilots, so if possible we would take a plane. If we can get a plane, we would fly as close to New Zealand as possible, as this is the closest major landmass to Takutea (the closest Airport is on the neighbouring island of Rarotonga, but even this is 118 nau. miles away.) In a perfect world we would land on Atiu [the closest island to Takutea, but still 14 nau. miles away] and make/steal/co-erce/buy a boat.

Takutea is uninhabited, with no premanent residents. This will mean there is a low chance of anyone (or zombies) already being on the island, however until a complete sweep has been done, there will be gaurds on watch night and day. Takutea has been designated a reserve for 'Red Footed Boobies': these will be our primary source of food until a proper agriculture can be set up. After the island has been swept coast to coast (min. 3x), we will begin work on a perimeter fence made from the trees growing on the island. This will be 3 fences thick, 10 ft high and there will be a single entrance, which must be opened from the inside. This will be used to keep people in for 24 hours (1 day) so we can be sure they are not infected (everyone on the island will also be observed for 24 hours) [this 24 hours is based on Max Brook's Zombies, as is everything I write on the subject].

The area left by the deforestation will be used for agriculture, mainly pastoral but arable if we are able to transport any livestock from Atiu. Any wooded areas left will be sustainably transformed into houses, gaurdtowers other fortifications (there will be eventually another ring of fences around the settlement we will create). And any remaining will be fire wood and a habitat for Boobies and other edible birds. Any boats that wash onto the island will be watched for 3 days, then burnt from a safe distance. With someone watching over the burner from inside the fence.

Any fishing will be done near to the coast, and all fishermen will face the usual 24 hour quarantine after each trip. Any bodies (infected or not) will be headshotted, and incinerated away from the settlement. Several human-powered generators will be used to power radios etc, in order to keep in contact with the rest of the world. Rain water will be collected and stored for use. Any extra food produced will be stored for as long as possible and either used in times of hardship or for trade with anyone who passes by the island (although it is unlikely anyone would).

If the island is already claimed by anyone, we will attempt negotiating our way in, then (if we got the guns) force our way onto the island. If we didn't get the guns and are refused access we will try nearby Atiu island, which is much larger but pre-inhabited. Hopefully the changes in circumstance (the island is already known to be able to support everyone, it was a basic infrastructure) will allow the inhabitants to allow us onto the island. If not, they will probably have split up into seperate groups. If all groups do not accept us and the island is already claimed, this plan fails.

Ahem.

But as soon as I leave, you'll just steal my island!
I'm onto you...
And it's almost 6,000 kilometers from the island to Melbourne.
New Zealands closer, but not by much.
And Boobies=Birds. Stop laughing, you child.
