Escape from... the Forest?Submitted by Moose Ranger on Mon, 04/12/2010 - 18:47 |
For The Record: this is not a universal Plan, it fits exactly to my situation. it is also assumed that the outbreak is at the beginning stages when this plan is executed, i am still working on My plan for more immediate danger.
Yes, i live in a Farley rural area, but its a very crowded rural area, its hard to find but harder to escape from, i live near a hunt club who could very likely become an authoritative local power, now they don't seem like the brightest of people, so, they might be a huge threat. I'd want to get the hell out of hear, so if an outbreak in my vicinity seemed likely, i would suggest to my mom a visit to my best friends house, which is luckily a perfect hideout. they live in the middle of nowhere, near the small town of Walkerton, the population is minuscule, and its a 2 story house, they have 2 machetes and a shotgun(Which proudly i have a record of 27 out of 30 clays), that could provide basic defense against the odd zombie attack. it's a farmhouse, so they have the ability to grow their own food, its a large area, but its mostly fields, so its an easily patrolled perimeter, they have a large assortment of musical instruments(although the piano they have can hardly be called an instrument, it must be a hundred years old and sounds like somethings dieing every time i try to play the god damn thing), which should keep us occupied and sane. all of us have a certain amount of good survival skills, so when the electricity and well run out, and the stove goes, we can make fire, and cook our own food/boil water to purify it. the biggest problem again is hunters, there are lots of them, and likely would not be friendly, I'm not sure how we could defend our position if a group of hunters turned raiders attacked the farm. the only other problem i can see is that the second story is very small, and i don't know how long we would last if we were forced up there by a zombie horde. as i said before, a zombie horde is unlikely due to the low population, but unlikely is different than impossible...
Fair point about the hunt club probably becoming a 'threat' of sorts, especially considering the psychological effect of prolonged zombie sieges...
Shotgun isn't the best weapon for defending a large rural area (like you seem to be describing), but it should be fine for iside the house.
Musical instruments could be loud, and attract zombies, so be careful where and when you play, invest in soundproofing.
If zombies do encroach into the house, and you are forced unpstairs, I would suggest a ladder etc that can be lowered, and someone speedy to close all doors. After thism get everyone out and burn the house down. In the short time you get before the next zombie wanders onto your path, take the time to build multiple shelters, each with many ways out, and single entrances.
Not so sure how to deal with the hunters, but everyone needs food; trade some for safety perhaps?
thanks for the suggestions, i am aware of the shotgun not being an ideal weapon, it's probably the best we could get our hands on though, if i had my choice, i would go for an M1 Garand, but those are extremely hard to come by. thanks for the tip about the ladder, instead of building shelters though, we'd probably move once we had the chance.
