The best weapons for traveling are semi-automatic Carbines and Rifles, Assault Rifles that can be switched between semi-auto, burst, and full auto (use against hostile humans, not the undead), Shotguns of the Semi-Auto and Pump variety, Handguns should be used primarily as a back up weapon if at all possible.
The Worst weapons to carry while on the move are Bolt Action Rifles (I don't care how many shots it fires, while you work the bolt zombies just get closer, Break-Action/Single Shot/Double Barrel Shotguns because they give you 1-2 shots before you have to reload (basically its the equivalent to carrying a billboard around tell zombies where you are. Revolvers... while they look cool and are extremely powerful when compared to your standard 9mm they have one major flaw... they take FOREVER to reload (unless you happen to come across a crate full of speed loaders and ammo... but lets face it... the odds of that are only slightly better than the odds of someone creating a cure), Sniper Rifles could be used to clear an area from a distance but they are extremely loud and zombies tend to associate loud noises with food... like your FACE!, Sub-Machine Guns and Regular Machine Guns quite simply fire to many bullet and kill way to many zombies.
