Let’s talk about safe houses. Let’s say zombies attack right here, right now. You might actually survive for a while. But with just you, or your family if you live with them, your house is going to go under in about two days. My advice: take everything you can and then run. Take a car to your destination. Since this is the beginning, there’ll be zombies everywhere. Until we’ve reached the three week mark, DO NOT TRAVEL BY FOOT.
But I digress. If you’re leaving your house, do not travel by the main roads. I don’t care how long it takes you to get to your destination, take the long way. We don’t want to attract zombies right when they’re at their strongest. Therefore, now is the time to pick your base and your root to get there. I live in a small town, so it’s easy for me to get there, and if it means more than half an hour of driving, pick somewhere else. You can always move later.
(This is important to remember. Wherever you go, it’s not permanent. Don’t get attached to your surroundings. Mobility=Security)
My two personal places to go are banks and churches. Why? Well, both have multiple exits and entrances for quick escape, but not too many to guard. They will each have both small and large rooms, for multiple uses. And both are unlikely choices for a person who has not thought about their plans in case of Zompocalypse.
First, Banks. Think about it. A bank is specifically designed to protect your valuables. A vault can be used as both a jail, and if it comes to it, a last stand position. No zombie is going to get through solid steel anytime soon. Also, banks have more rooms than you would think. Although too many rooms can be a problem with a small party, a group of five could easily hold a bank.
Second, churches. As a fairly secular person, I see absolutely nothing wrong with hiding in a church. Face it, it’s the apocalypse. It’s apparent that God doesn’t give a shit at this point, so you might as well man up and break a few commandments. And, if you are a believer, a church might just offer you a bit more holy protection.
Anyway, the strategy is sound. A church usually has large doors, which can be easily barricaded, in the front, as well as a few other exits, that will be used as escape routes. My church, as well as many others has a tower, which can be used for easy sniping.
