As a CanadianSubmitted by fischer0dude on Fri, 01/29/2010 - 19:58 |
Hello, my name is not important, only that I am 20 year old College Educated Journeyman welder, and that I live about an hour west of Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada. I live in a small town of less that 100 people. I originally grew up in NW Ontario (quite literally) in the middle of no where. The nearest GAS STATION was an hours drive away. Needless to say, I am not a bumbling city slicker (pardon the term). My plan, if you can call it such, is really quite safe / easy and perfect for survival. The all import hinge to my plan, is Canada. So, with this, I begin. Apon hearing of all hell breaking loose (ie confirmed zombie attacks) I will call my buddies and we will all meet with as much food (dried or canned) as we can at my fiend's farm. He lives next to a really big concrete Grain Silo (long since abandoned) which will serve as shelter for the first weeks, maybe months, until things have calmed down. While here, we will hide our selves, pretend no one is here and use the already in place barricade (a 4 x 8 3/8 plate steel over the one way in) to keep others and any one out. Once things have calmed down, and only Zombie will remain (few in our rural setting I bope) the 10 - 20 (depending on which of my friends have girls, they all told me if they had a signifigant other they would bring them) My buddies farm has 2 1000 gallon above ground gas tanks, so having stocked up as many jerry cans as we could get (before holding up) and burrying them to keep safe from fleeing people) we would get what ever gas is left from the tanks, load the jerry cans in the back of out trucks, and head north, following the back roads (Very Very rarely travels by not but farmers in this area) until we get to Hudson's Bay. This will be the hardest part, getting as far north as Hudson's bay with out trouble, the back roads thin out around The Pas, but I figure by that time there will be so few people on the roads (since this is a rural area) and most would have either fled or help up in their homes. ALSO I hop to make this point of the journey about 3 weeks to a month after innitial break out. By now it would have gotten worse or better, and If worse, I will keep heading north. Also, I hope that the virus will not be in this part of Canada, so it should be smooth sailing.
Once we get to Hudson's Bay (there is no summer road to Churchill), we will get our bearings and head to a small marina in Churchill. Gasoline will be not much of an issue as I personally have 20 18 gallon Jerry Cans, and my Jeep Commanche is very good on fuel. My buddies trucks, I dunno, but I am sure we could make this route to Churchil with out much difficulty. Also, around this parallel, the open tundra begins, so x-counrty will not be an issue if the roads are blocked (but how many people live this far north? If the virus made it here in a month after the break out I would be amazed) At any rate, my Uncle has a 60 ft sailing boat moored in the marina, and if he is still alive there is no way he would let it get taken, and from here, we would be safe. (FYI This is my spring / summer plan and I assume I would have made to the boat with out any ice in the Hudson Straits) If not, like I said, this a very remote town, I am sure we could hold the winter here. Also, Zombies + Tundra winters = Zombicicles. So, holding out the winter would be piece of cake. From there, we would take the boat (and whatever supplies or other boats we could find, other people, ect, ect, would could to make a sizable ocean group and (time of year permitting) we will set off around Labrador and down the east cost. since by now about 3 months would have passed, winter would be apon us, the gasoline would surely be used, and may ov the other boats would have makeshift sails for propulsion. Now Labrador is a very unpopulated area of Canada, rugged hills, rocks and harsh winters keep people away. But, this is home, the very immage of where I was born and raised. I can trap, hunt so this I could teach and game is plentiful in this area, so food will be repetitive and boring, but we will have it, and we could beach the boats for shelter, and badabing badaboom here we are. Staying here forever, my be possible, I would not immagine seeing a zombie or person for a few years where I am headed, plenty of time to build a pallisade for a large compound for farming in summer (which is possible) plus, fish in the ocean, lakes, rivers, over the days we would build a heavy wood fort, with enough room for all, a scout tower, maybe a bigger boat w/e I don't know. My plan is for 10 - 100 people (the most I think I will find to follow me on the trip) for 2 years. My reasoning is that, heading north and going to Labrador via the Hudson Strait has no people, also having the boats means we can leave when ever we need to. Versus trying to drive (run out of gas and walk the rest) to Labrador would take us to Southern Ontario and Quebec where lots of people = lots of danger. Safetly is in mobility, being able to leave is key, which is why building on the coast and the boats is key. If we are discovered by people, and they are bringing an army, we can burn the fort and GTFO before they show up. Also, this is the one key flaw to my plan.
I have always wanted to go to the carribean. How ever, I never had the time or money to go there. So, with my boats, I could sail down and enjow the nice warm sun, enjoying the last luxury this world could provide. This would be dangerous beyond compare, but after a few years, I am sure I would get tired of Labrador and decide, what the hell. Same deal though, stay near / on the water and be ready to run. Never build anything you can't up and leave as the need be, and be ready to leave when ever, and you might live on the run, but you will endure.
Also, Pirates maybe an issue in the Carribean, but not in Labrador.
It is cold, misrable and NO ONE IN THERE RIGHT MIND WOULD GO THERE! Mostly people think living there would be too hard or impossible. But I could do it alone, the only reason I don't is 1. I am a soacial creature 2. If I got hurt I would be SOL 3. I am strong, but I can not build a 20 foot Palisade by self, I could not sail a 60 foot boat by myself ect. I just need help and friends. Don't wana end up talking to a volley ball named Wilson right?
Feel free to comment on this, and come swing by once you get a place going, allies in the coming darkness is a key to survival.
I know this plan is very vague, it is supposed to be. I have a general plan, and a more than flexible means of getting there. I am also factoring in the law of "What ever can go wrong, will" to give my self about a total of a years worth of time in which to get to my final destination, taking the safest anit human (thus zombie) possible. All to often (even at work) people make plans, down to the minute and try to do it, fail, and fall behind on dead lines becuase they were unable to "think" to try a different way, or they set their dead lines to soon and SHIT HAPPENED. and the most important rule of zombies is this : Zombies are not your enemy. Humans are, they are unpredictable, they consome good usable food, they make waste, they MAKE zombies, ect, ect, the smaller your group, and the less people you CAN encounter the better.
good plan,its realistic
Going for practicality is an admirable thing in zombie plans. You done good!
As for your wielding n such... Are you also good with metal work? Like.... Could you make swords (if you wanted to)?
Thank you very much for the positive feed back. As making swords, the past two years (yes I went to college to learn to weld and crazy math) I would buy High Carbon steel (or swipe from a scrap yard for cheap dollars, everything from Rail, to Springs are all high carbon steel, and would heat them up in black smith coal to make my own chizels and chipping hammers. Since you mentioned it, I looked into actually making a sword, and I think I could. It would not be as fany looking, as light, well balanced ect, but I could make one strong enough to do battle and not dull after 4 hits (as with some reproduction works) But I would have to try, and see how it goes. Do no count on it in a jiffy though, the idea of me learning to make swords in less that a year seems unrealistic. And I love the idea of ammoing up and taking a wal mart, but how many people are trying to get to said wal mart, and even if you have 500 000 bullets per gun, chances are they won't last a year against a super zombie horde, also, can you make bullets? Casting rounds is NOT easy, it has to be precise of any usefulness. Also, what about the smokeless power modern weapons use? Black power is easy to make, but would not give a modern fire arm it's deadliness. Also, do you want fight Zombie for the rest of for ever? I think not. ALSO REMEMBER MY GOLDEN RULE! WHAT EVER CAN GO WRONG WILL GO WRONG AND EXPECT IT AND PLAN FOR!
Cool another welder here! Iam working on my Welding ATA I allready got machining skills and CNC thats right! I was 17 and working with robotic mills and lathes! Anyways glad to meetya.
I am Certified in all Stick 7018, 6010, Flux Core, Solid Wire, Stainless (stick and solid wire flat only) And I have my Pipe Ticket and I am working on Boiler plate. On top of all that, I drive the shop's 25 ton flat deck( a Peter built), I sand blast, paint, work steel, lathe too, (also operate manitoba's largest band saw, google Thom's Welding) I am the Jack of all trades. Good to meet you, where abouts you working, and how's the pay? Glad to see some one else in the trades! Cudos to you and two thumbs up!
P.S My heart truely lies in Forestry (IE Lumber Jack) but that feild of work has ....no work, and I liked welding, SO here I am!
P.S.S You are more than welcome to visit when the Zombie's take over. Just remember, no loitering, slouching, moaning / groaning, sneaking about and the like. Basicly, do not act like a Zombie or a Raider.
how olds your uncle?
just wondering if he could fight off 5-10 able bodied people for his boat...
I am betting that the Virus, zombies, what ever, will not reach Churchill, at least not in a year I would doubt any way. Besides, who can really sail a boat? I know how to, doesn't mean I am any good, also, if you never took a lesson, do not bet on being able to sail in life / death situation. It is not as easy as it looks.
So, between the over all lack of panic, the fact that it is small community, and that is issolated (no road) I am sure no one would try and steal it. My uncle is a reasonable guy, and he would most likely help people he though would be worth it. Ect ect.
