I see most of the plans on here fall on assumptions and most of those assumptions are based around the availability and locations of key supplies. While this wouldnt guarantee failure it will definitely put your survival at risk. I have read one or two mentions of a "bug out bag" which i find to be highly recommendable. instead of scrambling at the news of an outbreak you grab your bag and go. as far as the contents go youll need the obvious: weaponry and excessive ammunition, i would recommend a shotgun given the stopping power and ease of purchase, cleaning, and operation. a hatchet or machete is also advisable given it makes a decent weapon and has fair amount of utility(no i wouldnt recommend a katana its a dumb fucking idea, yes you can slice and dice zombies but other than that it has no utility and just takes up space and adds weight). a small amount of food weather it be canned goods or energy bars. just enough to keep you running for a few days, dont let it take up too much room, you can survive for quite some time without food. a water source and a means of purifying water for an extended period of time. flashlight and batteries. multi-tool. sleeping system dependent on your climate. if you have the space to spare i would put in your zombie survival outfit of choice since you wont have time to change until you reach your safe point (boots and sturdy clothes). any medication you or your party need to survive. something to produce fire with. im sure there is more that is escaping me right now but you get the basic idea.
so not that the word is out and the zombies are running rampant its time to snatch up bug out bag, grab your loved ones, and make for your vehicles, the more vehicles you can bring the better for you later. also at this point you should be calling your friends as well to rally. in my plan we rally at the local home depot, a mere 10 minute drive away and the perfect structure for a long term survival plan. take whatever vehicles you and your warrior band have brought and pull them inside the building via the loading bay.the next few tasks are all very crucial so the more hands you have to help the faster they will go.
1st- clear the building and set up security, who knows what has gotten inside before you and guarantee nothing is coming in after you.
2nd- fortify the building, close all the doors and reinforce all entrances, home depot has ample building materials it shouldnt be too difficult to make a simple hasty patches over the door, they can be blocked better later on when you have ample time. on the main door in the front just throw a pad lock on it you will need the large door later on in the weeks to come. make sure the garden center door is locked you will need safe access to this area as well.

5th- start organizing your supplies, start with food and water and work your way to non-essentials, youre going to need to get a good idea of how long you can remain in the structure before you go out.
once all of this is done organize your personnel and set up watches, take a deep breath, and rest... congratulations you've survived the immediate threats.
i estimate that depending on the size of your group you can survive for about 2 weeks on the amount of candy, chips, and beef jerky just in the front of the store, that doesnt even take into account whats in storage or if your party can actually discipline their eating habits. so the next 2 weeks go toward your first major challenges, food and water. fortunately home depot has all youll need to set up a garden, a rather large one i might add. you can use both the out door garden center area and the roof. get everything planted and growing, sooner you start the sooner you have a sustainable food source. if in some sick twist of fate zombie can climb the rules of the game change a bit, during your first days youll be needing to grab all of the dirt, fertilizer, and seeds you can get your hands on. they sell halogen lights at home depot, your garden will just have to be indoors, this is also true of the winter months. water being the next major challenge if much more simple to overcome given that not only does water fall from the sky with reasonable regularity but you can also get it from the ground via a simple pump or well. but short term a bunch of buckets on the roof or other means of rain collection will suffice. The final project is for immediate food needs and has 2 parts. first begin to armor your vehicles, focus on being able to dismount and mount quickly and of course keeping yourself secure from the undead horde. second build yourself a car port of sorts, ive been thinking chain linked fence with barbed wire or something similar along the top. make the car port big enough to pull several vehicles into. so basically what you have is pull vehicles through the first door, close first door. kill any zombies that have leaked into your car port. open the second door and pull in and unload whatever look you have gathered for the day. when you do finally go out on a raid be sure to bring enough people. not only will you need several people to breach and clear, you need many to gather and load the supplies. in addition to them youll need many more to establish security so you dont end up cornered. if you are careful and properly execute your raids you can continue this almost indefinitely allowing you to procure medication, ammunition, food, and a multitude of other necessities. you could even find a farm and steal some live stock if any are left which would help your renewable food supply.
another major advantage to home depot is that they have a lot of literature on how to "do it yourself" which allows you to learn ways to better your fortification. ideas i have had:
1- masonry to help fortify along with welding
2- building pumps either manual or electric
3- energy production via solar or wind, possibly even hydro
4- water filtration
5- plumbing
other things to consider:
you may come across other survivors or some of your own you may have cause to believe are contaminated so building some sort of holding cell would be advisable. you could also use these to hold zombies if you feel like researching them or finding a cute that doesnt involve a round to the dome piece.

Part of having a zombie plan is actually being prepared like you said, yet you say go to home depot and fortify there. What if there are zombies inside? What if its overrun? Any good zombie plan requires that you actually be prepared and have all of this equipment at the ready before the zompocalypse even occurs, not after. You shouldn't be basing your plan on assumptions of what the zombies should be able to do, your plan should include every type of zombie, and what they can do. Can they operate door handles? Can they climb? Do they express frustration and bang harder and harder on the barricade used to keep them out? All of this should already be taken care of before any zombies show up if at all possible.
I don't recommend the whole Home Depot meet-up and fortification part. Take what you need (If they have trucks to transport large orders you could stock up on supplies you might need to fortify a safer location and go there instead.
